Best MPG – Crude Oil to Petrol and Saving Gas

The lifeblood of industry is oil. And it is most accurately represented by the high demand for that commodity which may become increasingly scarce in the future: petrol.

For the common layman, it may be surprising to note that not all petrol are refined/blended the same way as expected. Nor is it the same composition for countries with four seasons.

Gasoline is a petroleum-derived mixture made of hydrocarbons and enhanced with iso-octane or toluene and benzene to raise the octane rating. Yes, I know this may as well sound like Greek to you so I will go by them one by one. Hydrocarbons are organic compounds made of hydrogen and carbon.

Composition Processed in refineries, gasoline is a distillation of crude. On its first pass, this grade of gasoline still has impurities and would not be suitable for internal combustion engines. The hydrocarbons found in gasoline is considered hazardous including: Toluene, Benzene, Naphthalene, Trimethylbenzene, Etc.

Currently the preferred composition of gasoline in developed countries have paraffins in substitution of benzene.

Overall, the composition of gasoline ratios depend on the following factors: – The refinery it was processed – The quality of crude used – The octane rating of the gasoline

Volatility Volatility is the attribute of gasoline to evaporate. The desired volatility of gasoline depends on the climate. In hotter climates, lower volatility is preferred to prevent it from igniting easily and also to prevent it from vapor lock, which means that the gasoline will turn to gas in the gas line.

In colder climates, higher volatility is recommended to enhance a vehicle's startup process.

Octane Rating An octane rating is the measure of the fuel to RESIST autoignition and detonation.

Octane numbers are rated by their anti-knocking properties compared to a control substance of iso-octane (combustible) and n-heptane (non-combustible). So an 87-octane petrol would mean its 87% iso-octane and 13% n-heptane. A 95-octane is 95% iso-octane and 5% n-heptane, and so on.

Hazards Gasoline is considered a hazardous substance and must be handled carefully. Even with all the substitutions it is still a major pollutant producer. Gasoline usage creates carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and unburnt evaporated gasoline reacts with sunlight to create smog.

What’s Green Living All About? Facts and Myths About Organic Living

When you hear someone say 'green living' or 'go green', are your eyes alight with curiosity? Or do you think that since you 'reduce, reuse and recycle', you're living green? If you're like most people today, you do the standard 'green' things, almost entirely unaware that there's a greener, cleaner world of options available to you. The truth is, opportunities to live better, cleaner and healthier abound. Cleaning green, eating organic, being kind to the environment, urban gardening and incorporating organic ingredients into your everyday life are all aspects that you can adopt in whole or in part. Even if you only chose to adopt one aspect of living greener, such as cleaning green, you're a leap ahead of where you were before. Let's discuss some aspects of organic living.

The biggest myth about eating organic is that, if you're eating organic, your diet consists of sprouts, roots and berries, in that order. The fact of the matter is there are different levels of eating organic, so your diet can contain a wide variety of foods, all of which will be healthy and good for you, without sacrificing taste. For example, if you eat organic fruits and vegetables, you're not ingesting pesticides and herbicides which commercial farms use on regular produce found in your grocery store, so you're already eating healthier having changed one thing. Most people who eat organic enjoy free-pressed juice, almond and other nut butters, home-made wheat bread and chocolate, too!

Cleaning green is another practical aspect of organic living. So, what does 'cleaning green' mean? In a nutshell, you're using natural ingredients to clean, thus eliminating harsh ingredients that require you to 'open a window for ventilation'. Did you know that salt, sugar, vinegar and lemon juice, among other common household finds, double as cleaning products? There are many recipes online for homemade, organic cleaning solutions as well as commercially available products for everything from cleaning the windows to cleaning clothes.

What does it mean to be kind to the environment? When you are being kind to people or pets, how do you behave? Offering a shoulder to cry on, an ear for listening, an uplifting hug and advice are all acts of kindness to those you love or care about. You reach for things that are out of reach for someone else or you stoop when someone cannot bend. You cuddle and feed your pets because you love them; these, too, are acts of kindness. Since you cannot hug the earth or give it advice, how do you show the environment kindness? Eating organic, pesticide-free foods and foods, planting trees, driving environmentally friendly cars or riding bikes or walking and simply recycling, which keeps plastics, paper and cans out of landfills, are just a few things you can do to be kind to the environment.

These are just three of the many different aspects of organic, green living that the average person can adopt without doing anything terribly life-altering. There are many websites that allow you to explore urban gardening, alternative energy, creative uses for various products to keep them out of landfills and many other so-called green topics that enrich your life and the world around you at the same time.

Green Building Products and Materials – 7 Factors to Consider When Making Green Selections

There are many products on the market that claim to be green. It is up to you to determine which products are green and which are not. Beware of “green washing”! Many products are advertised as green, but after review really do not live up to their claims. Here are 7 factors to consider when selecting green or sustainable products and materials for your project.

Renewability – Are the products made from material that is rapidly renewable such as cork or bamboo? Wood products are also a renewable resource. Choose wood products that are FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified. Many engineered wood products are made from fast growing trees such as aspen and require less wood to make them than conventional lumber.

Recycled Content - Using material with recycled content not only reduces strain on our landfills, but reduces the need for raw material. Paper, cardboard, plastic, steel and aluminum are a few of the most commonly recycled materials. Recycled paper is used in cellulose insulation and paper countertops. Plastic is used in carpet. Metals that are recycled can be made into their original form.

Reusability and Recyclability - Many products, such as metals, can be recycled after their useable life. Others can be salvaged and reused somewhere else.

Durability - Choose products that will stand the test of time and require little maintenance. This will save time, money and energy on repairs at a later date.

Embodied Energy - This is the energy used to produce, transport and install a product or material in the place where it will be used. Choose local products when possible and products that do not require a large amount of energy to produce.

Air Quality - Products like carpet, cabinetry, plywood and paint can contain petroleum products or formaldehyde and off gas VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds). There are now many products available that give off little or no VOCs. These products will give you a healthier home to live in. When you are not able to find suitable products, ventilate the new or remodeled space prior to moving into it. Open windows and doors when possible to remove the VOCs from the home.

Waste Reduction - Choose material that does not create a lot of waste and can be used efficiently. Order material in sizes and lengths that are efficient for your job.

Some products may be green in one area but not in another. Example: Although it is very durable, brick has a high embodied energy because of the energy used to fire the kilns and transport it. It would be a greener option for someone in North Carolina than someone in New York because the clay that is used to make it is a local product. Use these 7 factors and your best judgement to determine which green products are the best for your project.
