Why We Should Use Eco-Friendly Products

Eco-friendly products are a fast growing market. People are aware that environmental pollution is threatening the existence of planet and we all need to think of ways to be more eco-friendly.

People are now more aware these days and want to find ways to be more eco-friendly. If you thought it would make your life a bit tougher, it is nothing like that. You can sustain your way of living and still be eco-friendly. You just have to do things a little differently. Consider the environment while doing your daily chores. Those little things would combine to impact the environment in big way.

You could do simple things like switching off electric appliances when unnecessary, using public transport instead of your own car, use water in a bowl instead of running tap water while shaving, etc. Every little thing will help. Helping environment does not mean that you have to change your lifestyle completely. Keep it simple. You can do your bit.

Eco-friendly bags are the latest trend in waste reduction. As we all know, plastic bags have become a grave challenge for the world environment. Ending up in threatening landfills every year, they need to be replaced with urgency. Although several governments and organizations have understood the gravity of the situation and responded accordingly, much more needs to be done. Every individual can play a role in helping the situation. It is time we take upon ourselves to tackle the problem and undertake an oath to begin using eco-friendly bags instead of those harmful plastic ones.

Use of CFL bulbs is another thing that would make us more energy-efficient, thus reducing the impact on environment. It is good to deploy these to replace incandescent bulbs that drain valuable energy. While using CFL bulbs, you will actually use a quarter of the energy you use compared to light a normal bulb, bring your electricity bill down to a fraction of what it usually is. These bulbs are one of the most simple and practical means to become eco-friendly. Gains are great, both for ourselves as well as the environment.

There are several eco-friendly appliances which perform functions that can greatly save on energy consumption. For instance, you can buy eco-friendly programmable thermostats which tap much less energy. The thermostat would automatically shut the A/C or furnace unit for you, enabling you to set a temperature and forget about the unit altogether.

You could use eco-friendly products with various appliances within your home or office. You can use ‘green’ chemicals in place of the regular ones which have hazardous effects on the environment. This would not only protect your body but also lessen the chemicals you release into the world. You could go for solar or battery-powered equipment. You could bring down your usage of paper by opting for e-books.

Price is not a deterrent for people becoming eco-friendly. If you check, you will find that eco-friendly products often end up saving you money. We have to cultivate the habit of environmental preservation in everything we do.

Simple things like use of eco friendly bags could play a part in controlling environment pollution. After all, even little things can trigger big change if everyone works together.

Top Reasons To Buy Eco-friendly Products

Eco-friendly products or ‘ecology-friendly products’ are products that are nature friendly. For a product to be nature friendly, it must be produced entirely from natural products without the use of any harmful additives. The finished product would be completely natural.

Here are some reasons to buy eco-friendly products:

1.The planet that we live on is a living, breathing planet. It has a limited amount of resources and it is important to save these resources if we want to preserve the quality of life we now enjoy. Commodities like plastic bottles, plastic bags and so on choke the earth. The heavy use of chemicals and disinfectants upsets the delicate equilibrium that sustains life on Earth. Through the use of eco-friendly products, we can put into practice the age old philosophy of ‘Recycle, Reuse and Reduce’. By using eco-friendly products, we can maintain this equilibrium.

2.In the normal course of manufacture, factories and industries produce a large number of hazardous waste products that ultimately pollute the earth. Eco-friendly products do not harm the Earth even through the release of by-products.

3.Factories that produce eco-friendly products are themselves nature friendly. They make use of natural resources like the sun and wind to provide energy. Thus, they do not overload the fragile ecosystem.

4.Eco-friendly products make use of biodegradable products which go back into the earth without creating any lasting problems.

5.The concept of recycling is vital to eco-friendly products. By recycling and reusing materials, there is effective management of the resources of the Earth.

6.Eco-friendly products are human-friendly too. Such products do not cause any irritation on the skin or cause harmful reactions on the body. As people become more and more sensitive to the effects of chemicals in their environment, the use of eco-friendly products like organic clothes and natural soaps are in demand.

In our daily lives, we can incorporate eco-friendliness by using clothes that are made from natural materials and use organic dyes. Organically manufactured soaps, toys, cosmetics are other options. Even recycled paper is a great blessing as it greatly reduces cutting down of trees. Eco friendly bags reduce the burden of plastic on the Earth. If millions of people switch over to eco-friendly products, it is possible to make a huge difference. We can reduce our carbon footprint and bring the Earth back from the brink of an ecological disaster.

5 Ways to Have an Eco-Friendly Child

From the moment that they’re born, children are mass consumers. The lists that you make of all the things that your new baby needs soon turn into the lists of all the things that your young child wants. Bringing your child up to be eco-friendly may be a little daunting, but it’s achievable because there’s more than enough help out there for all of us. Here’s just 5 of the many ways that you can have an Eco-Friendly child:

1 Begin at Home – Encouraging your child to grow up living an eco-friendly lifestyle, begins at home, with the entire family. Set the standard and lead by example. Make sure that you recycle your plastics, washing and crushing any bottles and piling up any paper or cardboard that can be taken away to be recycled. When you have a household recycling point in your home, you can educate the whole family about what, when and how to recycle.

Tip: Why not turn it into a game or competition and make it fun at the same time?

2 Clothing – You can avoid mass-manufactured clothing created by 11 year-olds in sweatshops in Asia, by seeking out companies that sell eco-friendly and ethically produced children’s clothing.

Choosing clothing for your baby or child that encourages sustainability and is manufactured with a low impact on the environment is a great way for your child to be eco-friendly on a daily basis. Look out for eco-friendly clothing that is free of chemicals and uses 100% natural fibers.

Tip: Think about choosing sustainable fibers such as organic cotton or bamboo

3 Skin Care – Young babies and children need a lot of love and care. Creams, lotions, shampoos and soaps all help keep them healthy, clean and happy. But many of the traditional skin care products for children come in plastic, non-recyclable containers and are manufactured using inorganic ingredients.

It’s been shown that over 60% of what we put on our skin is absorbed by the body. A young child’s immune system shouldn’t have to contend with all the nasty chemicals that come in standard skin care products.

When you choose eco-friendly skin care products for your baby, you should look for products that use 100% natural ingredients and that come in containers and packaging that are 100% recyclable.

Tip: Always read the labels of baby products and look out for ingredients you want to avoid

4 Eco-Toys – Eco friendly toys are made from natural, safe materials that do not impact negatively upon either the environment, nor introduce harmful chemicals into your home. If you’re looking for a toy that you feel confident for your little ones to chew and teeth on, look for a guarantee that no pesticides or chemicals are used in the production process.

You should look out for toys that are made from 100% natural fibers and you’ll be making your eco-friendly contribution to the planet.

Tip: Wooden and organic cotton toys are great fun and very eco-friendly

5 Food – Of course, one of the simplest ways to have an eco-friendly child is through your choice and selection of the food that they eat. Since babies are more prone to infections and more vulnerable to pesticides and their immune system is not fully operational, it makes sense to pick an organic product, packaged in chemical-free wrapping. Choosing locally produced food is also a way to reduce your carbon footprint and help your child live an eco-friendly lifestyle.

Tip: Save money as well by growing vegetables at home, and to encourage your children to eat the, educate with fruit/ vegetable shaped toys

So there you have it, 5 simple ways to ensure that your child starts life in an eco-friendly way.

Buying Eco-Friendly Wood The Right Way

There’s no doubt about it, eco-friendly wood is all the rage. There are a lot of companies out there promoting ipe, teak, tigerwood and other domestic and exotic hardwoods as eco-friendly. This leads to a dilemma; how can consumers find lumber companies that are truly dedicated to sustainable forestry practices and the production of eco-friendly wood? As the general public becomes more environmentally conscious, we must not be quick to believe anything labeled organic, eco-friendly, and/or environmentally safe. After all, it’s one thing to merely say, or promote yourself as eco-friendly; it’s another to actually live and form habits that are designed to promote an eco-friendly lifestyle and economy. This is true whether you are buying ipe decking, tigerwood flooring, or even composite decking.

To put it simply, companies are trying to cash into the green building revolution by simply putting a banner on their website stating that they offer eco-friendly wood. These companies believe that consumers will go to them, see their website and say, “That’s it. I’ve found the perfect place to buy my eco-friendly decking. My search is over!” However, one thing that these companies fail to realize is that homeowners are not as naïve as previously hoped. In fact, thanks to the Internet, homeowners and builders alike are weeding out those companies who are not committed to sustainable wood and forestry practices.

Finding eco-friendly lumber companies is easier than ever thanks to organizations such as The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and the United States Green Building Council (USGBC). These organizations are dedicated to ensuring that the forests and rainforests where many of these woods come from are preserved and taken care of for generations to come. The Forest Stewardship Council also has a strict set of policies and forestry procedures that must be followed to the letter. For example, if a direct importer of ipe decking wants to harvest some ipe lumber from a managed forest, the FSC will specially designate which trees are to be used, and which are to be left in place. In addition, the FSC could also require that a FSC Certified lumber company also harvest some other hardwood such as cumaru, or garapa. The FSC mandates forestry practices like these in order to balance out the environment. Only then can that ipe decking receive FSC Certification.

As you can see, there are valid and reliable non-profit resources that are able to adequately provide decking materials that can truly be called eco-friendly. Homeowners and builders who want to work with lumber companies that are FSC Certified can do so without worrying about being manipulated. A couple of lumber companies that fit the mold are Advantage Trim & Lumber Company and Ipe Depot. Before they received their FSC Certification, they were already a leader in promoting managed forests and sustainable forestry practices. Advantage Trim & Lumber Company and Ipe Depot don’t just say that they’re eco-friendly, they actually go out of their way to make sure that all of their wood and not just their inventory of FSC Certified wood is eco-friendly.

George Amarillo is an ipe decking expert. He can help the general public understand the importance of building with eco-friendly wood that does not damage the environment.
