What is a Carbon Tax?
Undoubtedly, society as a whole has taken the threat of global warming and greenhouse gases and run with it. The popularity of the “green” movement has led to everyone from businesses to lawmakers making decisions based on it. Surely by now you have heard the term “carbon tax,” especially in discussion of proposed legislature. Aside from cap-and-trade, carbon taxes are one of the most popular topics when it comes to discussions of taxing emissions.
Basically, carbon taxes aim to make cheaper fuels like coal much more expensive so that alternative energy sources like wind power will have a fighting chance. By taxing certain fuels by their carbon emissions, businesses will undoubtedly invest in alternative energy sources which will definitely offer a return over a perpetual carbon tax.
So, the main purpose of a carbon tax is to give consumers an incentive to use alternative energy sources as opposed to the “dirty” fuels like coal that “green” proponents are so against. By making it more expensive to use fuels with a higher carbon content, fuels with less emissions will be close to the same price as “dirty” fuels.
Through use of a carbon tax, fuels with high carbon emissions will likely be taxed more on the consumer level. Though some extra fees will surely be placed on production and distribution, the actual use of these fossil fuels such as gasoline or coal-produced electricity is where the tax will come into play.
In the United States, only one law implementing a carbon tax exists so far. In Boulder, Colorado, citizens pay a carbon tax on top of their electric bill, reflective of how many kilowatt-hours of electricity they used that month. This includes businesses as well. However, the tax does not effect utilities, only consumers.
