There isn’t a garden in every back yard, as a matter of fact you hardly ever see one at all. And we all keep the temperature nice and cozy by keeping the heater and a/c running pretty much non stop.

Now, all those conveniences aren’t evil by themselves. It’s that the cumulative effect of hundreds of thousands of people in every city in a country using all that energy adds up to a huge carbon footprint made up of all those little footprints put together. And you really can’t lay all of the responsibility on the companies that produce all that energy for people to consume.

There are people out there who put a large part of the blame on the companies that produce all that energy that everyone uses. Sure, the facts say that the coal fired electric plant produces more co2 emissions than all the cars in Atlanta, but it’s individual people who demand and use all that electricity. And no business can take on the carbon output of millions of people, try to make it add up to zero and stay in business.

It’s obvious at this point how massive the changes have been over the last 100 years. It might also be dawning on you that energy consumption on the individual level has a bigger impact on how industry effects the environment than just looking at the companies themselves. It’s definitely a lot different around your town than it was in 1902.

And business and energy companies have been under constant attack over the last fifteen years to make big cut backs in co2 emissions. But it is virtually impossible to produce cheap electricity and petroleum products as well as soak up and get rid of millions of folks carbon footprints at the same time.

It’s not an easy thing to come to grips with, that it might not be the big, bad, greedy oil companies that pollute without any regard to the environment. It’s everyone put together demanding all that energy for our lifestyles. Yes, those companies need to take responsibility for environmental impact of operations, but there are only so many ways to do messy things and do them all with low co2 emissions. Industry is feeding the appetites of society, of cities, of – you.
